One of the latest Quantity Surveyors to join our team is Jack Nolan, who is working with Bob Long within the Star Pubs & Bars team.
Jack has come to PSE Associates directly from four years of studying. His first degree was in Building Surveying (from Brighton University) and he recently completed his Masters in Quantity Surveying at Portsmouth University. He now plans to work towards becoming a chartered surveyor.
“It was while studying for my degree that I realised I particularly enjoyed working with numbers and finance, more than pure construction, so I decided to pursue Quantity Surveying,” Jack explains.
He was drawn to working on projects in the hospitality industry.
“I liked the fast-paced nature of working in this sector and the fact that there would always be new challenges,” he says.
Jack lives just outside Brighton and was worried that he’d have to start commuting to London to pursue this type of role, but then found an opportunity in Brighton, with PSE Associates.
“I was really pleased that there was a possibility of working in Brighton, but then I heard about the office move during my interview and that means I can now walk to work,” he says. “I do consider myself really lucky in that respect.”
While he’s only been here a short time, Jack says that PSE Associates offers a ‘great environment’ to work in and that the team has been ‘very accommodating and friendly.”
“I’m looking forward to getting out on site and seeing my first project through from start to finish, as well as getting involved with Project Management,” he says. “In addition, I’m excited to get to know our clients and build ongoing working relationships with them.”
Jack worked in various roles for five years before embarking on his degree, which included a period working in a pub. There he developed a keen interest in real ale – including how it’s made and stored, as well as enjoying a pint or two himself. He has retained his links with the pub and currently plays in the pub team on a Sunday morning.
“I think this actually worked out well for me, as that period of time gave me a chance to think about what I really wanted to do as a career,” he explains.
In his spare time, Jack enjoys keeping fit and taking part in sports; not only football but running and cycling too, as well as walking on the South Downs and socialising with friends. He also enjoys the spectacle of a live sporting event and has been a season ticket holder at QPR.
